Strategy Based on Your Marks Range

Marks: 680+

Go all-in on AIIMS and JIPMER. These seats are purely AIQ. Focus on choice order AIIMS Delhi → AIIMS Mangalore → JIPMER. No state strategy needed for most candidates.

Marks: 640–679

Target top state GMCs and AIQ slots at BHU, BJ Govt Pune, GMC Thiruvananthapuram. Also shortlist deemed unis like MGIMS Wardha as backup. Prioritize your home state quota.

Marks: 600–639

Domicile becomes critical. Apply in your home state quota first. Also check AIQ opportunities in less competitive states. Shortlist 2-3 quality private colleges as backup.

Marks: 560–599

State quota is your primary route. Apply in all AIQ rounds. For private colleges, compare fees carefully. Deemed universities (low-cost ones like MGIMS, SRM) are viable.

Marks: 520–559

Target private and deemed colleges. State quota GMC is unlikely in most states for General category. SC/ST candidates still have hope in some state quotas. Compare 10+ private colleges.

Marks: Below 520

For General/OBC, MBBS in India is extremely difficult. Explore NRI seats in select private colleges, or consider MBBS abroad. SC/ST candidates can still try state quota.

Frequently Asked Questions

The minimum NEET marks to qualify (clear cutoff) for MBBS in India is different from actually securing a seat. The qualifying cutoff for General category is typically 50th percentile (~360 marks). However, to actually get a government college seat, you need approximately 580+ marks in most states. Private medical colleges accept lower scores through management quota, starting from 450-480 marks in some states.

With 600 marks (AIR approximately 11,000-14,000), getting a Government Medical College seat depends on your category and state. For General category, it is possible in some state GMCs in states with a large number of colleges (UP, Bihar, Rajasthan) under state quota, if you have domicile. For OBC/SC/ST, the probability is much higher as you compete in category merit lists.

A government college is almost always better financially annual fees range from ₹1,628 (AIIMS) to ₹50,000 vs ₹5-25 lakh in private colleges. The clinical exposure, stipend during internship, and hostel facilities are generally better in established GMCs. However, some premium private colleges (KMC Manipal, SRMC Chennai, Amrita) offer equivalent training. If you can afford it and the college is NMC-accredited with a good track record, private is acceptable.

No, NEET scores do not expire. Your NEET 2026 score is valid for NEET 2026 admission cycle only. If you want to try again for a better college in 2027, you must appear in NEET 2027. There is currently no provision for using NEET scores from previous years for current year admissions.

Tamil Nadu has the most MBBS seats (around 10,800 total), followed by Karnataka (~9,500), Maharashtra (~8,200), Uttar Pradesh (~5,250), and Gujarat (~5,100). For domicile students in these states, the competition is still high but there are more seats available. State quota seats are 85% of all available seats in each GMC.
